RIVERSIDE

Edgar McGuire, who has been a member of the Riverside City Council for five years, thanked Mayor Allen Schneider and the city’s residents in his closing comments during the council’s Nov. 20 meeting.

McGuire is finishing up a term and will be replaced by former Planning & Zoning Commission Chair Ryan Rogerson in his Council seat.

“I’ve worked very hard on Council and I’m very grateful for the last five years for the opportunity,” McGuire said.

Rogerson was the leading vote-getter in the Nov. 7 election. He was elected to the City Council for a four-year term. Current Council Persons Lois Schneider and Kevin Kiene were re-elected to four-year terms. McGuire, who also serves with the Washington County Riverboat Foundation, fell 21 votes short of re-election.

Schneider, who is beginning a fifth two-year term as mayor, thanked McGuire for his work.

“This will be a nice two-year vacation for me,” McGuire said.

City Hall Doors

The Council approved a proposal from Walsh Door & Security of Iowa City to make improvements to the entrance to City Hall.

The doors have proven to be difficult for those with mobility issues.

City Administrator Cole Smith said the work will include the replacement of the motor that controls the opening of the doors, and a push bar and outside handle.

The cost is $6,651.

Boat Ramp

Brian Boelke, a senior civil engineer with Axiom Consultants of Iowa City, said his firm is working on design plans for Phase I of scheduled improvements at the Riverside Boat Ramp on the English River.

A multi-phase proposal includes installing more signage, clearing some small trees and brush, installing a gravel or seal-coat driveway, and installing picnic tables and shelters with green space.

The Council deferred action on applying for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources Water Trail Assistance Program. Instead, the city plans on applying for the program at a later date as it works closely with the Washington County Conservation Board on the project.

Council Actions

The Council approved a proposal of $9,646 from Hardscape Solutions of Iowa for work on the newly installed retaining wall on Third Street.

The Council approved a proposal of $4,810 from Laserfiche Cloud for a one-year subscription for digitalization of city documents.

The Council voted to post a part-time position for the purposes of snow removal.

Next board meeting: The City Council’s next regularly scheduled meeting is at 6 p.m. Dec. 4.
