Matthew Charles “Matt” Schillig, Jr, of Stratton, Colorado, passed away Aug. 26, 2021, at the age of 68. Private services will be held at a later date.
Matt was born April 2, 1953, in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Matthew Charles, Sr. and Betty Ruth (Pokorny) Schillig.
Matt grew up in the Iowa City area and graduated from Mid-Prairie High School in 1971. He married Cynthia Marie Grieser on June 14, 1978, in Anamosa, Iowa.
He retired from the Kansas Department of Transportation after more than 30 years. In his spare time he enjoyed fishing, camping and the outdoors. He spent time with his grandsons fishing. Matt had a passion for horticulture, cultivation, and gardening.
He is survived by his sons: Aden (Sara) Schillig of Texas City, Texas and Steven (Stacy) Schillig of Stratton, Colorado; four grandchildren; and siblings: Betty (Bill) Halleran of Riverside, Iowa, Barb (Gary) Carlson of Anamosa, Iowa, Karen (Bruce) Barnekow of Mason City, Iowa, Shirley (Greg) Harland of Kalona, Iowa, John (Tracy) Schillig of Easton, Kansas, and Kristine (Juan) Sandiford of Nassau, Bahamas.
Matt was preceded in death by his parents; wife: Cynthia; and sister: Rebecca “Beck” Schillig.
