Loren Brandsma, 94, died Monday, May 31, 2021, at the Bird House in Iowa City, Iowa.

Loren was born Feb. 2, 1927, in Rock Valley, Iowa, the son of Abe and Rena (Heimstra) Brandsma. He grew up in Canton, South Dakota, and graduated from Canton High School. After graduation, he farmed with his father and brother, Allen. He joined the Army and served in the Korean War. He was stationed in Germany, and he and Allen enjoyed touring Europe together.

After his military service, Loren attended South Dakota State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in agriculture. During this time, he met his future wife, Roberta Walsh. They were united in marriage Aug. 4, 1958.

Loren and Roberta lived most of their married life in Iowa. Loren worked for Funks Seed Corn for several years, and then for the USDA.

Loren and Roberta retired in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where they enjoyed reconnecting with family. In 2010, they relocated to Kalona, Iowa, to be near their new granddaughter, Claudia. Loren loved being a grandpa, and he spent many hours playing checkers, Old Maid, and Go Fish.

Loren is survived by his daughter: Lori; her husband: Bill; and his granddaughter: Claudia, all of Iowa City; and his brother: George Brandsma of Euless, Texas.

Loren was preceded in death by his wife: Roberta; his parents; stillborn infant twin boys; and brothers: Robert and Allen.

Graveside services for both Loren and Roberta will be held at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Alcester, South Dakota. Instead of flowers and plants, memorials may be directed to the Bird House Hospice Home of Johnson County.
