Kalona

Jack Mehaffey and family drove over from Lone Tree Sunday for a few days visit here.

Isaac Bradford and Mary Topping of Wellman were guests of Mrs. Dorotha Manatt Sunday.

Mr. and Mrs. Gringer, of Hills, came out to Kalona to attend the Schmitt-Lemley wedding.

Mr. Beranek, of Riverside, was a caller at the Shradel home Wednesday.

Wm. Billingsley was taken suddenly ill while in the Kalona Savings Bank Wednesday morning but, we are glad to say, he is much better at this writing.

Ed. Kelso will leave Wellman next Saturday night for Lone Tree, where he has bought a half interest in a large general merchandise business.

100 Years Ago • Jan. 1, 1920

Kalona

Adams & Son report the following real estate transactions since our last issue: L. E. Southwick and R. B. Brenneman, exchanged properties. Roy Boone bought the B. J. Shetler property in north Kalona and Jesse Rowe bought the Mary C. Wilson property in the south part of town.

Emery Hofer, son of Mrs. Katharine Hofer, has been discharged from the U.S. service and arrived home Christmas Day, Emery is, we believe, the last one of Kalona’s boys to reach home. He is looking fine and healthy.

75 Years Ago • Jan. 4, 1945

Cleo D. Gingerich, son of Mrs. Cora Gingerich, has successfully completed his single-engine fighter pilot training at the Armed Air Forces Advanced Flying School, Luke Field, Ariz.

Joe Chody, S2/c, spent a leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Chody, over the holidays. Chody has been confined to the hospital with scarlet fever.

Marjorie Gingerich, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe P. Gingerich, who has been a patient at the Children’s Hospital for the past 10 weeks, spent from Saturday until Wednesday at the parental home.

Mr. and Mrs. Clem Shalla entertained the following at a dinner on Monday evening: Mr. and Mrs. Charles Marek, Dale and Bob; Mr. and Mrs. Joe Lasek; Mr. and Mrs. Joe TeBockhorst and Mary Ann; Mr. and Mrs. Leo TeBockhorst, Bob, Dick and Norma June; Mr. and Mrs. Harry Jirsa and Larry; Mr. and Mrs. Lamont Kelley, Jimmy and Mary Ellen; Tommy Kallaus, Al Selement, Phyllis Goodwin and Dale Duwa.

Mr. and Mrs. Dave Hochstetler and Sherman, Mrs. Bill Logan and children were dinner guests in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Milt Schlabaugh on New Year’s Day.

Mrs. Anna Grady entertained her family at their annual Christmas Day dinner. Guests present included the following: Mr. and Mrs. Ivo Grady and family, Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Grady and Timmy, Mr. and Mrs. Irvin Kelley, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Strickler and Sherwood, Ed Kern and family, Mrs. Willis Gingerich, Norma Grady, Mr. and Mrs. Lamont Kelley and family, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Schnoebelen, Charles Strabala and sons, Mr. and Mrs. Merton Schnoebelen, and Merle, Ernest Dean and Hazel, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Strickler, and Mrs. Belle Marner.

Mr. and Mrs. Alva Kepler entertained at a birthday dinner in honor of their daughter, Karen, who celebrated her second birthday. Guests present were Mr. and Mrs. W. O. Reif, Mr. and Mrs. Gale Reif and Miss Sue Reif.

Mrs. Clair Grout and Mrs. Paul Bailey entertained at a party at the Clair Grout home New Year’s Eve.

Pauline and Louise Kallaus visited several days last week at the Walter Ledman home.

Wellman

Mr. and Mrs. Ellery Foster and Mr. and Mrs. Burrell Foster and Hila Sue spent Sunday visiting Dr. Wayne Fosters in Cedar Rapids.

Virginia Wagamon, of South English, has been staying with her sisters, Mrs. Milo Eckhardt and Mrs. Carol Sitler, during Christmas vacation.

Orval Troyer has traded his town residence on a farm near Wellman and will soon take up farming.

Mr. and Mrs. Charles Capper entertained at a New Year’s party: Mr. and Mrs. Chase Millice, Jimmy and Glen, Mr. and Mrs. Otha Jones and family, Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Plecker, Joyce and Kenneth, Mr. and Mrs. Emery Kleinschmidt and Mrs. John Kleinschmidt, John, Roy and Leona, and Frank and Howard Brush.

David Brenneman has been reported wounded in action in Germany, Dec. 14. He was serving with the infantry.

A message from the War Department informed Mrs. Glenn Smith that Sgt. Glenn Smith was wounded Dec. 15.

Lone Tree

Mr. and Mrs. Donald Crawford and Mr. and Mrs. Harry Stock entertained the members of the Pinochle Club and their husbands at a New Year’s Eve party at the Crawford home. In the group were Mr. and Mrs. Dana Musser, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Musser, Mr. and Mrs. Everett Neal, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Strong, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Baker, Mr. and Mrs. Harley Petru, Mrs. Mable Burr, Letha Burr, Mrs. Gladys Lasek, Mrs. Betty Schnoebelen, and Grace Richey.

A group of young people watched the old year out and the new year in at a party at the Wolfe home when Mrs. Atlee Wolfe entertained for Burton Wolfe. Games, dancing, and refreshments made for a good time that will be remembered. Burton’s brother, Archie, was up from Wapello. Other guests were Mary Forwald, Diane Abrams, Nora Lee Kilbourne, Betty Tagge, Kay Smothers, Mary Frances Cantrell, Margaret Stock, Margaret Griebel, Charles McLean, Henry Schlapkohl, Floyd Hotz, Marion Smothers, Billy Musser, Eldon Jarrard and Donald Eden.

Members of the Chat and Bid Club met Saturday evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Rife with Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Rife as special guests.

Kalona

Mayor and Mrs. Richard Adams entertained at a holiday open house at their home with councilmen, other town employees and their wives attending.

Personnel of the Kalona post office and their guests were entertained at an open house Christmas Eve, in the home of Postmaster and Mrs. Earl D. Fry and sons.

Guests of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Chapek and family Sunday evening for a rabbit supper included Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Yotty and family, Jane, Louise and Gary Kallaus, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Kallaus,

Mr. and Mrs. Jim Yoder, Todd and Tia, of Owensboro, Ky., are visiting two weeks in the parental Wayne Yoder and Don Miller homes during the holidays. Jim Miller, of Iowa City, has also been a guest in the parental Miller home the past week.

Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Schrock were Saturday visitors of Mrs. Vera Schrock. Monday callers were Mrs. Ada Schrock and Stella Yoder. Mrs. James Leichty and girls were callers during Christmas week.

Relatives entertained at dinner on Christmas Day in the home of Mr. and Mrs. William Nisly were Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Kemp and family, Mr. and Mrs. Sheldon Nisly, Mr. and Mrs. Weldon Nisly, Jenelle Nisly, Marcus, Hope and Ross Nisly.

Christmas Day guests of Mr. and Mrs. Gareth Swartzendruber and family were Mr. and Mrs. Morris Swartzendruber and family, Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Miller and sons, Mr. and Mrs. Ellis Swartzendruber and sons, Mr. and Mrs. Paul D. Mr. and Mrs. Mose P. Yoder were host and hostess at a Christmas dinner Thursday evening in the community room. Relatives sharing the occasion were Mr. and Mrs. Ray M. Yoder, Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Yoder, Mr. and Mrs. Ezra Brenneman, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob (Chuck) Swantz and family, Mrs. Frank Hartzler and sons, Mr. and Mrs. Dale Rhodes, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Leichty, Mildred, Luella and Vera Yoder, Rosalyn Yoder, Dennis Miller and Larion Yoder.

Wellman

Wellman Garden Club met at Mr. Robert’s Smorgastable Dec. 19 for a Christmas luncheon. Twenty-seven members and three guests were present. President Korene Wirtz presided at the business meeting. Mrs. Ed Yoder and Mrs. Leon Schauf were in charge of the program.

The Homebuilders Sunday school class met at the home of Berneice Penningroth with an attendance of eight members and guests. President Harriet Blumenstein conducted the business meeting. Millie Whetstine, a guest, displayed some beautiful rag rugs she had made.

Staff Sgt. Bill Walker arrived home from Vietnam to spend a leave in the parental Howard Walker home.

Guests at a pre-Christmas dinner Dec. 21 in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Carter were Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Kuhns, Mrs. Wayne Hazelton and family, Mr. and Mrs. Don Yoder and family, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Seward and family, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Kuhns and family, Mr. and Mrs. Ellis Hartzler and family, Mr. and Mrs. Merlyn Beckler, Mrs. Farrell Statler and family.

Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Wasson and family entertained at a family dinner on Christmas: Mr. and Mrs. Cullen Moomey, Mr. and Mrs. Clair Grout and Larry, Mrs. Douglas Goschke, Mr. and Mrs. Ron Johnson and family and Ora Wasson.

 

Lone Tree

Mr. and Mrs. Robert Watkinson entertained at a family gathering and an oyster supper on Christmas Eve after which a gift exchange was held. Those attending were Mr. and Mrs. James Watkinson and Darren, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Watkinson, Lu Ann, Tom, Sammie, Barbara, Mary, Susie, and Johnnie, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Krueger, Mr. and Mrs. John Smid, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Krueger, Todd and MIchelle, Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Krueger, Merry and Ron and Mr. and Mrs. Fay Watkinson.

Holiday guests in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Yoder were their daughters Mary of Iowa City, Eileen of Denver, and their son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Merle Yoder of Indiana.

Mr. and Mrs. James Harney, Leanne and Thomas and Dale Mottet were Wednesday evening guests at the home of H. C. Buell.

Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Hemstead and Mr. and Mrs. Everett Buline were Sunday evening callers in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lelind Watson.

 

Riverside

Night Marshal Dale Rath reports a break in at the Joe Pailliotet Implement Store in Saturday evening. At the time of reporting the robbery, it was known that $5 in cash was taken, a flashlight and a torque wrench. Two young men from Burlington were caught in Muscatine and being held for this robbery, along with several others that they were caught for on the way to Muscatine.

Christmas Day guests of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Frank were Mr. and Mrs. Paul Frank and family, Mr. and Mrs. Ardell Gerot and Dean, Mr. and Mrs. Gaylen Kron and family, Mr. and Mrs. Vince Sojka and sons, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Gerot and family, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Frank and family, Mr. and Mrs. David Frank and Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Kron.

Mr. and Mrs. Paul Stuart have received word from their son, Pfc. Jerry W. Stuart, that he sustained injuries to both legs in Vietnam recently. Stuart, stationed with the 199th Infantry near Saigon, has been in Vietnam since July. He expected to be sent to Japan for surgery, then returned to the United States.
