Lone Tree returns to the court with 49-17 win over Tri-County

Finally playing in their first game of the season Thursday, it took the Lone Tree girls a few minutes to find a rhythm offensively.

After Maddie Jacque ended the early field goal drought with a steal and a 3-point play, the shots started falling. The Lady Lions finished the first quarter on a 16-2 run and went on to a 49-17 win over Tri-County in the season opener.

“We definitely looked like a ball team that just hadn't played in a while," Lone Tree coach Ryan Shelman said. "We're going to find our stride, we're going to figure it out.”

“Our defense kind of carried us, because there were some times where the offense wasn't quite flowing, which is to be expected in the first game. Our defense really carried us and transitioned into offense a couple of times for us.”

Jacque scored 17 of her 22 points in the first half. In addition to her conventional 3-point play, she made five 3-point shots from behind the arc.

Jacque said the offense started to pick up from “just playing together and starting to move the ball around.

“Having the shots fall, it just got us into the flow of the game again,” she said.

Lone Tree did not allow more than five points in any quarter and outscored Tri-County 14-2 in the third. The Lady Lions held the Trojans to 6-30 shooting with 30 turnovers.

Kasey Chown scored the first points of the second half with a steal and layup. She scored all 13 of her points in the second half.

“We’ve got to find ways to score and one of the best ways to do that is just defending first and let your defense carry the offense,” Shelman said.

Josie Mullinnix scored twice on putbacks and finished with eight points.

The Lady Lions were originally scheduled to begin the season against Tri-County on November 23rd before classes moved online. On Thursday, the Trojans were playing their seventh game of the season while the Lone Tree took the court for the first time.

Over the past month, the Lady Lions have only had six practices with the entire roster present, according to Shelman.

“So, it's been tough for us, but our girls have done a good job staying positive as best we can,” he said.  “And I'm just proud of our girls, because we got a chance to play basketball together.”

It was a long wait for Jacque, but her senior season is finally under way.

“Oh, it feels so good,” she said about being back on the court. “It feels like home.”
