Lone Tree finishes season at state qualifying meet

Racing in their season finale, the Lone Tree Lions and Lady Lions headed to Iowa City to compete in a 1A State Qualifier meet taking place at the Kickers Soccer Complex on Oct. 19.

The top 10 individual racers and the top two teams earned the distinct honor of qualifying for the Iowa State High School Cross-Country championship race taking place at Lakeside Municipal Golf Course in Fort Dodge.

“In training for the district meet they are focusing on their race strategy along with mental preparation,” Lone Tree coach Ashley Zaruba said about Lone Tree’s preparation. “This is a great group that supports one another and pushes each other to do their very best.”

Similar to previous meets, Lone Tree had three runners compete in the boys race and three runners compete in the girls race.

Leading the way for the Lady Lions was junior Vivian Zaruba. The third year runner was unable to duplicate her success from a year ago, qualifying for state with a sixth place finish, but she still ended her season with a strong performance, placing 29th in 23:56.

Sophomore Jazmine Nino, placing 45th in 26:00, and freshman Abigail Zaruba, placing 64th in 29:18, put the finishing touches on a season that saw great improvement throughout.

It was more of the same for freshman Brock Nebergall at the state qualifiers, running the course in an impressive time to lead the Lone Tree boys team. Getting better as the year went on Nebergall ended his first cross county season with a time of 19:20 to place 31st.

“They have all continuously improved in practice and in meets,” coach Zaruba said about her teams’ progress throughout the season. “This is being displayed by personal records being repeatedly broken in meet performance. They have a great mind set and strive to be the best they can be.”

The next Lion to cross the finish line was junior Taylor Alberhasky, placing 75th in 22:38. Senior Joey Birtcher ended the final race of his high school career with a time of 24:16 to place 92nd.

Van Buren County sophomore Lincoln Bainbridge won the boys race in 16:52. He was the only runner to complete the course in under 17 minutes. Regina claimed first with 51 team points and Danville was the runner-up with 60 points.

The girls race saw Hillcrest’s Marie Yoder place first in 20:30. The talented freshman completed the race over 30 seconds faster than the next runner to cross the finish line. Regina also won this team title with 52 points and Collins-Maxwell placed second with 58 points.
