Lone Tree FFA chapter teaches younger students about farm safety

On May 11, 2021, the Lone Tree FFA hosted a Farm Safety Day. This year Farm Safety Day took place behind the school, near the football practice field. The fifth-grade students got to take their morning off to enjoy the different agriculture safety stations. The freshman, consisting of eight FFA greenhands, led the fifth graders to and from each of the stations. These FFA members did a great job leading the kids in a fun, but also in a safe manner.

At the PTO station, we also had the honors of having a combine this year. The FFA members showed the kids around the machinery and how to operate and be prepared around a PTO. These members did an excellent job giving these kids examples.

For the Auger and Grain Station, the FFA members talked about how important it is to protect your ears when around loud equipment, and how important it is to be careful around grain bins, augers and farm machinery. They were shown a demonstration of how the grain goes through the auger and even shown what it would be like if you were stuck in a grain bin.

There was a barrel with two tractor weights that were covered in corn. The children were fascinated by how hard it was to pull out the tractor weight. The members at this station did a wonderful job of showing the students how dangerous being on the farm can be, while also providing a fun activity for the students.

The FFA members at the Lawn Mower Safety Station, showed the different types of mowers, a weedwhacker and a leaf blower. The fifth graders learned about the proper and protective clothing to wear, and how to safely be around the equipment when being operated. The members did a nice job showing this equipment that is not only on the farm, but a lot of it may be in their own homes.

At the Fire and Chemical Station, the fifth graders were taught how to react if a fire were to occur, and how to handle fires on a farm. The FFA members at this station talked about how dangerous chemical jugs are and how dangerous chemicals are in general.

During ATV Safety, there was a four-wheeler, and side-by-side brought in. The fifth graders learned about the rules of owning an ATV, how to operate, the appropriate clothing to wear, and about the speed safety on different types of ATV. These members showed how to be safe, while also having fun.

The members also taught at an Educational Activity station. The fifth graders were educated on how to dress safely on the farm. The proper and protective clothing to wear depending on what activities you are participating in around the farm.

For the livestock station, amazing FFA members voluntarily brought in their animals, goats and cattle for the fifth graders. The children learned how to properly approach an animal, how to prevent them from catching different diseases, livestock’s flight zone and what to wear when working with livestock. The students enjoyed being around these animals and being able to touch them. The members showed it is important to be safe around animals even if they are cute and look friendly.

All of our incredible FFA members did a wonderful job from bringing in equipment or animals and teaching the students at each of the stations. After visiting each of the stations the students were able to leave with new knowledge about being on and around the farm. The Lone Tree FFA members displayed how important farm safety is!
