Lone Tree City Council discusses snow removal, sheriff contract hours

The Lone Tree City Council started their regular meeting on Monday, Feb. 1 by commending the city’s public works staff for their snow removal efforts over the past month.

“In the last couple of snowstorms, I’ve had favorable comments and didn’t hear many negative comments at all,” Mayor Joanne Havel said. “I think they’ve been doing a great job.”

Councilperson Ryan Ronan echoed Havel’s praise.

“I was out at about 11 o’clock at night and Ben [Slaughter] drove by and I thought I’d hop in his truck and see what those guys do,” Ronan said. “I was probably with Ben for about two hours. We’ve had a ton of snow in this town. A lot of people don’t realize that, with only having two employees, these guys are constantly moving snow. Our town is bigger than you think. I’m so appreciative of what we have after watching those two working late into the night.”

Sheriff Brad Kunkel attended the meeting to present the sheriff department’s contract changes for fiscal year 21-22.

“This is a contract year where the hourly rate for patrol will go up,” Kunkel said. “Every other year the rate goes up and this is the year we go up $2 an hour.”

The current cost per hour is $45, which, with 1,352 contracted hours, figures to $60,840 per year. With the $2 an hour increase, the proposed annual fee is $63,544, an increase of $2,704.

No action was taken on the contract at the meeting.

In other business, the council unanimously passed two resolutions. Resolution 2021-A set the SF634 Max Levy for fiscal year 2021-22 at $390,509 and Resolution 2021-C approved a budget amendment due to an increase in expenditures for the community dining program.

Finally, the council approved liquor license renewals for Dollar General and the BP. Both applied for a Class B wine permit, Class C beer permit and Sunday sales.
