Congressman Dave Loebsack visited Kalona and Wellman on Saturday to meet with constituents and hear topics on their mind.
Some came with issues they wanted help resolving. Others were simply out for the morning and ran into Loebsack as he visited Kalona Coffeehouse and DJ’s Casual Café in Wellman.
Downtown Kalona property owner Stu Yoder wanted Loebsack to hear about his issues with the federal flood insurance program, specifically the sky-high rates he pays for flood premiums.
Yoder showed the local congressman bills for his insurance, $4,400 annually for flood insurance on a building that Yoder said cost him $60,000. Other insurance costs were just over $1,000.
“I pay four times more for flood, and it’s never been flooded before in history,” Yoder said. “I just don’t get no relief.”
He added: “Every time I pay it, I get angry.”
