Lions roll past WACO for win

The Lone Tree Lions spoiled the WACO Warriors’ home opener on Friday, scoring six touchdowns in a 42-6 victory for their first win of the season.

Amid chants of “Let’s go blue!” and “Go white!” from the home and visiting fans, both teams’ uniforms gradually turned brown with mud as they played a heavy rushing game. Only one of the Lions’ touchdowns came from a pass by junior quarterback Cade Shield.

Shield got the Lions offense going early with a touchdown carry only 4:02 into the first quarter. Senior running back Alex Viner then put on a clinic, completing a hat trick of touchdowns while adding a two-point conversion to put the Lions up 28-0 by halftime. Viner had an impressive game, running for 173 of Lone Tree’s 300 total yards.

Shield added another rushing touchdown at 6:28 of the third quarter. While Shield was only 3-of-11 in his passing attempts, he did manage to find junior Cade Patterson for a touchdown pass to put the game away for good at 40-6, with Patterson adding another two points in the conversion at 3:46 of the fourth quarter.

The lone setback of the evening for the Lions, and the lone bright spot for the hometown fans, came at 8:56 of the third quarter, when senior quarterback Will Edeker rushed in to put the Warriors on the board.
