Once again Memorial Day is coming up. It’s nice that some of our citizens of this great country of “We the People” know what this day is all about. It’s a day to honor those who have sacrificed so much to keep this country out of the hands of dictators and other greedy self-serving people. The soldiers who stormed the beaches of Normandy and raised the flag at Iwo Jima, those with boots on the ground in Korea, Vietnam, Iraq always in harm’s way. Some don’t respect and treat these heroes like we should. That flag they defend is spit upon, burnt and knelt down before it by those who have very little idea what it stands for.

A big thanks to the Mid-Prairie school FFA instructor and students for their fine help in raising the flags at Sharon Hill Cemetery in Kalona. Without these fine volunteers the job wouldn’t get done.

When remembering we also need to say thanks to the many other volunteers, firemen, and first responders who are on call all the time to help in times of need. Volunteers of all kinds in our community are always needed. If you have the time, please step up and help.
