There is a new addition to the downtown Kalona landscape.
The city of Kalona recently installed a message board between the post office and fire station on Fifth Street.
“The sign is a LED watchfire sign that will function as a community message board,” Kalona City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh said.
City officials are still working on guidelines regarding what types of messages will be displayed on the sign.
“We are working through learning the software and coming up with rules and regulations for what can go on the sign,” Schlabaugh said.
Currently, the time and temperature and some community announcements are the only things displayed on the sign, but it is much more versatile.
“We will be able to run pictures and script that will make the sign much more functional than how we are currently utilizing it,” Schlabaugh said.
The sign – including the foundation, masonry and electrical work – cost the city between $35,000 and $37,000, according to Schlabaugh.
The city paid for the project with funds from the Washington County Riverboat Foundation.
