IOWA CITY

The Johnson County Board of Supervisor approved agreements for law enforcement protections for the
cities of Lone Tree and Hills at its regular meeting on May 20.
The agreements cover the fiscal year 2022, and begin July 1, 2021.
The amount allocated for Lone Tree is $63,544. It includes approximately 26 hours per week of
patrolling and other law enforcement functions performed by the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.
The City of Lone Tree will pay Johnson County a rate of $47 per hour, per the agreement. Monthly
installments of $5,295.33 will begin on July 1.
The amount allocated for Hills is $34, 217, and includes 14 hours per week of patrolling and other law
enforcement functions. The rate is $47 per hour. Monthly installments of $2,851.33 will begin on July 1.
Lone Tree and Hills were among seven Johnson County communities to have police agreements
approved by the commissioners.
In other business, the commissioners:
Appointed Paula Dayton of Iowa City and Ann Satterly of Coraville to six-year terms on the Judicial
Magistrate Appointing Commission. Their terms begin immediately and end Dec. 31, 2026.
Approved a second reading of an airport zoning ordinance for Iowa City Municipal Airport.
Bridge damage on Derby: In a work session held May 19, it was announced that the weight limit for a
portion of Derby Avenue SW, south of 560 th Street, will be reduced from 25 tons to 3 tons. An inspection
revealed “significant damage” to a bridge going over a stream, causing the immediate change.
The road is located in southern Johnson County, northwest of Kalona and northeast of Wellman.
Ed Bartels, Assistant Johnson County Engineer, said signs would be installed immediately to indicate the
weight change. The road splits an 80-acre farming property.
“It’ll be an inconvenience for some people, for sure,” he said.
The bridge was constructed in 1954, Bartels said, and is used by about 100 vehicles per day.

The bridge will remain in service for passenger vehicles, but not for heavier loads. The structure was
already in the county’s five-year plan for repairs.
