The Kalona Historical Village will host a summer camp this year for children who have finished kindergarten through fifth grade. Three sessions will be held: June 14-17, June 21-24 and June 28-July 1.
The theme of the camp will be “Keeping history alive,” said director Suzanne Yoder. The campers will learn about life long ago and compare it to today. They will experience pioneer life beginning around the 1850s.
“We’ll compare. What was life like before? What was school like before? We will try to touch on games, music, dance, clothing, crafts and cooking,” Yoder said. “We have an amazing historical village with authentic historical buildings. It only makes sense to immerse the kids in them.”
Information about the camp and registration material is available at kalonaiowa.org under the summer camp tab.
Scholarships are available and all campers are encouraged to apply. Campers should answer the question “Why do you want to learn more about the past?” The way children respond to this question is open-ended, whether through writing, drawing, creating digital art or having a conversation.
