The city of Kalona is taking over the management of the water system on the Shiloh church property.
At Monday’s meeting, the City Council approved a management contract between the city and Shiloh.
For much of this year, Shiloh has been paying the city $1,000 a month for regular testing services for the water system.
“This takes second step toward ownership,” City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh said. “It allows us to take their current customers onto our billing system and collect the revenue. It allows for us to manage the system, but not have ownership. We still have the out clause, if the annexation does not proceed, to walk away. We don’t own it.
“We would be responsible for the general maintenance and operational expenses.”
There is a clause in the contract that the city is not responsible for any catastrophic failure beyond $5,000.
