At their regular meeting on Monday, Jan. 18, the Kalona city council heard the city’s plan for using the Washington County Riverboat Foundation funds for fiscal year 2021-2022. The city budgeted $140,000 in municipal funds that it plans to distribute between seven projects: Community center debt service; the Kalona Historical Society; disc golf course construction; the Kalona City Park ADA inclusive playground; Southtown recreation areas, including trailheads, amenities, dog park and nature scaping; youth flag drop-off receptacle; and the B Avenue pocket park.

“We feel these projects will meet the criteria outlined by the Riverboat foundation,” city administrator Ryan Schlabaugh said.

Of the projects selected last year, some are still in progress, such as finishing City Hall landscaping, library carpeting replacement. Other projects completed last year included flagpole replacement and unknown soldier cemetery pillars. As with this year, some of last year’s funds were also used for the community center debt service and the Kalona Historical Society.
