The Kalona Optimist Club will keep its flags flying in town until Saturday.
The flags were put up last week to honor Flag Day, which was June 14.
Kalona resident Suzanne Yoder suggested via Facebook that the Optimists keep the flags up to honor Juneteenth (June 19).
Juneteenth commemorated the end of slavery in the United States.
The message was forwarded to Jim Crowther, president of the Kalona Optimist Club, who said that the club agreed to the request.
Crowther said that there are currently 271 flags flying as part of the club’s flag program.
Participants buy a “subscription” so flags can be placed at their home or business on certain holidays.
“The regular dates are Memorial Day, Flag Day, Fourth of July, Patriot’s Day, Labor Day and Veterans Day,” Crowther said.
The club is offering discounted subscriptions at $65 for two years to help make up money lost by not being able to host concessions this summer. All of the money raised through subscriptions go toward local youth programs.
“Although circumstances are causing these programs to make changes, the needs are still there,” Crowther said.
