When Johnson County ranked third-highest in Iowa in positive COVID-19 cases during the pandemic, the county applied for a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) to help get groceries to those in quarantine and isolated at home.
What resulted was a grant of nearly $30,000 to assist residents in the county, including those in Hills and Lone Tree. The project was created to help Johnson County residents living mostly in rural areas and outside of Iowa City.
The Johnson County Commissioners heard an update on the program during a public hearing at its weekly formal meeting on June 3.
According to a report by Lynette Jacoby, Johnson County Social Services Director, 334 families received 1,437 deliveries of groceries from food pantries. More than 1,500 bags of groceries were delivered. In Hills and Lone Tree, CommUnity Food Bank of Iowa City assisted residents.
In addition to southern Johnson County, the program assisted residents of Coralville, Tiffin, North Liberty, Solon, Swisher, Oxford and Shueyville.
The CDBG program financed purchase and delivery of food at a time during the pandemic when requests for assistance went up and donations went down.
The public hearing on June 3 was a part of the program’s requirements.
