John Metz 86, of Riverside, passed away Saturday, May 22, 2021, at the Halcyon House in Washington.    Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 2, 2021, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Riverside.  Burial will be in the Mt. Vincent Cemetery, with military honors.  Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 1, 2021, from 4-7 p.m. at Snyder & Hollenbaugh Funeral & Cremation Services of Riverside.  Memorials have been established for St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Riverside and Hospice of Compasses of Washington.    Online condolences for the Metz’s family may be sent to www.sandhfuneralservice.com. 

John Bernard Metz was born May 6, 1935, in Riverside, the son of Simon F. and Hortense (Bulger) Metz.  John was a graduate of St. Mary’s School in 1953.  He went on to proudly serve his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. 

  On Aug. 3, 1957, he was united in marriage to Muriel Rummelhart at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Riverside. 

John had worked for the University of Iowa doing maintenance within the physical plant.  He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and a lifetime member of the Riverside V.F.W. Post 61414.   He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, walking, and playing cards. 

John will be deeply missed by his wife: Muriel; children: Carrie Peitzmeier of Grimes, Christine (Tom) Welte of Richmond, Janice (Greg) Thomann of Riverside and Timothy (Lisa) Metz of Riverside; grandchildren: Lauren (Sam) Conaway, Allison (John) Lorenzen, Mitchell (Kassi) Thomann, Abigial (Gabe) Crall, Molly (Jared) Bartheman, Megan (Cody) Kanke and Anna (fiancé, Parker Elwell) Welte; great-grandchildren: Levi, Tessa, Ben, Oscar, Wiley, Louis, Clay, Cael, Noah, Niah and two on the way; sisters: Ann Walsh of Davenport and Donna (Pete) Stumpf of Morris, Iowa; brother: Jim (Rajet) Metz of Peoria, Illinois; and several nieces and nephews. 

John was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Urban, Elmer, Edward, Melvin and Jerry Metz; and sisters: Vivian Kleinschmidt, Gladys Kron, Dorothy Brophy and one sister in infancy.
