IOWA CITY
Farmers Hen House, which produces eggs for food stores across southeast Iowa, is planning an expansion of its operations in Frytown.
The Johnson County Board of Supervisors approved a site-plan application during its formal session March 14.
Farmers Hen House intends to build a cold-storage facility behind its main building on 520th Street SW. The storage building would be 4,560 square feet.
The Board approved the application with a requirement that Farmers Avenue SW, which runs between Farmers Hen House and Frytown Properties & Distribution, be surfaced and widened.
Eldon Miller, an Amish farmer, founded Farmers Hen House in 1997 and sold it to Mark Miller three years later. Mark’s son, Ryan, is president. A network of family farms, many of them Amish and Mennonite farms in Iowa, provide the eggs for distribution.
Platting
The Board approved the preliminary plat for a 15-lot subdivision being planned in Cosgrove, northeast of Windham Village.
The Scott Rohrets Addition subdivision will consist of six buildable lots and nine outlots. The property is located on the south side of 400th Street SW, west of Erica Boulevard SW, and in an area that is seeing development of homes.
Roadwork Bidding
The Board will vote Thursday on awarding contracts of over $1 million combined for the 2024 seal coat and dust control maintenance programs on county roads.
LL Pelling of North Liberty was the low bidder on the seal coat work, at $729,607, and is expected to win the contract. Binns & Stevens, of Oskaloosa, was the only bidder on the dust control work, at $333,047.
Tax Levy Hearing
The Board scheduled a public hearing of 5:30 p.m. March 27 for the proposed property tax levies for Fiscal Year 2025.
Proposed property taxes are 5.99 countywide and 9.53 for rural. Both are down from the current year. The county’s taxable valuations have risen to $9.7 billion from $9.3 billion.
Board Action
The Board appointed Lindsey Jones as the new Director of Human Relations.
The Board approved the addition of service animals to the county employees handbook policies.
The Board approved agreements of acceptance for right-of-ways donated by residents Josephine Kathryn Wieland, and Larry and Janis Tener, in connection with a planned bridge replacement over Crooked Creek on Naples Avenue SW, west of Hills. Bidding for the project has a deadline of April 9.
The Board approved a number of change orders from Tricon General Construction, totaling more than $58,000, for work on the county courthouse remodel.
The Board approved an ARPA-funded subrecipient contract of $124,870, with the University of Iowa College of Nursing for doula services.
The Board approved a land-use agreement between the Johnson County Historic Poor Farm, and Lee and Melinda Turnbull.
The Board deferred action on a Sheriff’s Office collective bargaining agreement with Public Professional and Maintenance Employees (PPME), IUPAT Local 2003.
