Huskies win tight game over English Valleys

In the huddle between the first and second quarter of a non-conference game against English Valleys, the Huskies made a choice. A choice to let the game come to them and not try to force everything.

Jody Fink said that chat combined with some patience allowed the Huskies to take the 44-39 comeback victory and give Highland their first back-to-back wins this season.

The Huskies trailed 12-6 after the first quarter and had more turnovers than points in the first quarter having given the ball away 11 times. In the time between the first quarter and second Fink said that they talked about what needed to change, he then saw his team go out and achieve that.

“After the first quarter was over we handled the ball much better and took better control of it. It was nice to have a close game to work on time and situation during a ballgame,” Fink said.

The Huskies cut the deficit by one in the second quarter and trailed by five going into halftime.

The Huskies worked to get to the free-throw line in the second half. They were 17-27 as a team from the charity stripe while English Valleys was only 6-11.

Alyssa Brase had 19 points on the night and went 8-9 from the free-throw line. She also led the team with 13 rebounds and six steals.

Abbi Stransky was the team’s other double-digit scorer with 10 points. She grabbed five steals.

“We played with a lot more defensive intensity throughout the game. I was proud of the girls continued attitude to fight all the way through the game,” Fink said.

The Huskies outscored English Valleys 14-7 in the third and 10-7 in the fourth quarter to take the win.

Highland moves to 3-9 overall with the win. They looked for a third straight win on Tuesday at Hillcrest Academy. They host Lone Tree on Jan. 9.
