RIVERSIDE
Trapped in a one-run game with the season on the line Friday night, Highland used aggressive baserunning to score five times in the sixth inning of its 9-3 win over Lone Tree in the first round of the Iowa Class 1A softball tournament.
The Huskies (18-10) had defeated Lone Tree by a combined 21 runs in two previous shutout wins earlier this season, but the Lions (10-16) did not go down quietly. Lone Tree scored a run in the first inning and then closed a 4-1 deficit to 4-3, partly on Highland defensive errors.
The Huskies’ big sixth inning ended it.
“They came through when they need to,” Highland head coach Carrie Wieland said.
Sarah Burton, a junior, had a game-high three hits and four stolen bases for the Huskies. Grace Prybil, a junior, threw more than three scoreless innings in relief for Highland.
The Huskies, who have won seven of their last eight games against Southeast Iowa Super Conference rivals, face SEISC North champion Wapello in a regional quarterfinal at 7 Wednesday night at the Wapello Athletic Complex.
“Now it’s our turn to make that nervousness,” Wieland said.
