Huskies tip-off season vs L-M

Highland can't contain Sanders in 59-33 loss

The regular season tip-off finally arrived at Highland on Tuesday, bringing Louisa-Muscatine and Class 2A’s second-leading scorer to the Huskie gymnasium.

With 24 points, Falcon senior Kylee Sanders finished slightly below her season average of 29 points per game, but it was still enough for L-M to leave with a 59-33 victory.

Sophomore Dani Laughlin had 14 points and five steals for Highland, who was playing in its first game of the season while the Falcons were on their fifth.

Highland coach Jody Fink said the delayed start was not ideal, but it was good for his young team to finally get out on the court again and get some of the first-game jitters out.

“I thought our girls came out and played hard,” he said, “and that there were some good things that we did and there's stuff that we’ve got to work on.”

The Huskies did not score for the first four minutes on Tuesday, but still trailed just 10-7 after Abby Stransky made a shot late in the first quarter.

The Falcons drew seven fouls in the first quarter and made five free throws during a 12-0 run that stretched into the second, finally ended by a Laughlin 3-pointer.

Freshman Sarah Burton scored six of her seven points in the second half and grabbed nine rebounds. Stransky finished with five and Mackinze Hora scored four. Kayla Cerny led the Huskies with 10 rebounds.

After falling behind by 35, the Huskies finished the contest on a 12-3 run.

Sanders was 9-17 for L-M, she also led the Falcons with six rebounds and four assists. She had six steals, taking advantage of her length at the top of the zone defense.

“We knew what we were going have with her, and she's one of the best players in the state, in her class,” Fink said.

“She's just a different player, very active and we knew we knew what she was going to do, it’s a matter of stopping that.

When you get her trapped, you’ve got to be able sit there and hold her there and not let her escape. And she was able to get out like she’s been doing to everybody this year. We’ve got to do a better job of recognizing that and taking care of our business.”

Louisa-Muscatine improved to 4-1 with the win over Highland (0-1). The Huskies will be back in action at Danville (1-5) on Thursday.
