Highland coach Jody Fink was happy with how his team battled in a conference matchup with Pekin.
The Huskies came out on the losing end 43-37, but outscored Pekin 16-11 in the final quarter of the game.
“We could have rolled over and died, but we fought to the end and gave ourselves a chance,” Fink said.
The Huskies had it within a possession late in the fourth quarter, but Pekin put it away with free throws.
The Huskies had a scary moment in the second quarter as Alyssa Brase was tied up going for a rebound and hit her head on the floor. She sat out for around a quarter, but was back in and helped lead the Huskies on their run in the fourth quarter.
She finished with 17 points to lead Highland and also led the Huskies with nine rebounds.
The Huskies still are struggling with turnovers and Fink said that has to stop if they want to win games like this.
“There were too many times throughout the game that we shot ourselves in the foot with ill advised turnovers or forced shots,” Fink said.
The Huskies had seven offensive rebounds, but on many of those opportunities failed to make the put back, giving the Huskies no points on multiple shots at the basket.
Fink called them “bunny buckets” and said they missed too many on the night. Overall though, he said it was good to see improvement in a game.
“It is a work in progress, but they are making progress and moving forward,” Fink said.
Abbi Stransky finished with seven points, Jenna Sands had six points.
