Huskies pull away for senior night victory

Not many shots were falling for Lone Tree or Highland early in Wednesday’s game.

Through 11 minutes the teams were tied at 12-12. But after 11 more passed, the Huskies were firmly in control with a 38-19 lead.

Highland sophomore Dani Laughlin caught fire from outside, hitting a trio of 3-pointers to go along with a conventional 3-point play during the key 21-6 run. She finished with 23 points in the 58-38 victory as the Huskies avenged a 48-37 loss at Lone Tree on January 12.

“We felt like the loss to them last time shouldn’t have been a loss and we just brought all of our anger and passion tonight,” Laughlin said.

“I think we did a good job pushing the ball up and then not just looking for one player. We look around at the whole team for open shots and open looks.”

Senior Jenna Sands had 12 points, six rebounds, and five steals for the Huskies on senior night.

“It feels awesome to finally get a win,” she said.

“Offensively, we started running plays and looking for the open pass,” Sands said about the third quarter. “We were less selfish in this game and did a good job giving it up to our teammates and passing the ball forward.”

Fellow senior Kayla Cerny had four points, five rebounds, and three assists in the win.

Abbi Stransky had 13 points, eight rebounds, five steals and four assists. Freshman Sarah Burton had four assists and 10 rebounds, including four on the offensive glass.

Highland coach Jody Fink said that limiting Lone Tree’s second chance opportunities was key in the second half.

“We were able to sit there and get the rebounds, and they didn’t get a lot of second chance shots,” Fink said. “And you know, they’re kind of like us, we’re not going to make our first shot a lot of the time. So as long as they get one, they weren’t going to score.

“And then we identified who was open. They had a couple a couple of defensive breakdowns, where we were able to sit there and be patient, we found the open girl and we were able to put it in and capitalize.”

Kasey Chown and Maddie Jacque combined for 12 of Lone Tree’s 15 first-half points. Chown finished with 11 and Jacque had eight.

Allison Marshek had four of her six points in the third quarter. She was the only Lady Lion to score during the first six minutes of the second half.

Josie Mullinnix had all six of her points as Lone Tree opened the fourth quarter on a 7-2 run.

The loss was Lone Tree’s eighth in a row, while Highland snapped a nine-game losing streak with its first conference victory of the season.
