Huskies pay price for turnovers in BGM loss

Turnovers made the difference in a 28-7 loss for Highland against BGM, with the two interceptions and two fumbles coming in crucial spots for the Huskies.

Trailing 14-7 with time winding down in the first half, Highland ran a play that head coach Joe Donovan thought would be a sure touchdown from their own 47-yard line. Instead a fumble on the exchange from Connor Grinstead to Owen Donovan gave BGM the ball back and allowed them to take a 21-7 lead 21 seconds before halftime.

“We really had them confused on the play we fumbled on,” Donovan said. “There was nobody here… I was pretty positive it was going to be a touchdown and we fumbled it.”

A two-score lead isn’t insurmountable, and the Huskies began the third quarter with the ball and a chance to cut the lead to seven points. An interception at the BGM 40 stopped the drive.

The Highland defense held tough, but were pinned at the 4-yard line. An illegal procedure penalty backed the Huskies up to the 2-yard line and eventually they were forced to punt from their own end zone.

The punt under pressure from BGM only went to the Highland 20 and two plays later BGM back Noah Beck was in for his third touchdown of the night and BGM had a 28-7 lead.

The Huskies lost two fumbles and two interceptions against BGM, while the Highland defense did not force any turnovers.

“Well, I am tired of them. It’s two weeks in a row now that we just shoot ourselves in the foot,” Donovan said. “We talk about it; we stress it; we work on it, and then we come out and just don’t do it. It’s just a lack of focus.”

The Huskies almost added a touchdown midway through the fourth quarter on a Grinstead quarterback sneak, but his knee touched down a half-yard short of the goal line.

The first touchdown of the night for Highland came on an 87-yard toss from Grinstead to Donovan. Grinstead threw it out wide to Donovan, who leaped over a BGM defender in front of him to snatch the ball and run it in for a touchdown.

Grinstead finished the night 7-13 for 222 yards passing, one touchdown and one interception. Highland running back Cole Adamson was 0-1, throwing an interception on a trick play.

The Huskie defense struggled to contain Beck, who had 171 yards rushing and scored three touchdowns.

The Highland defense was led by Cole Adamson, who had 11 tackles on the night. Caedon Harbison had 6.5 tackles and Zack Lasek added a tackle for loss.

The loss pushes Highland to 3-2 and gives BGM early control of Class A District 6. Donovan said the team has to move past this and learn from their mistakes.

“Good football teams, when they need three yards, get three yards, and we are not doing that. That’s my No. 1 concern,” Donovan said.
