Highland controlled the game from the opening tip and used 19 steals to cruise to a 56-18 over Hillcrest Academy.
The Huskie defense allowed only four points in the first half of play against the Ravens, mostly due to their ability to get steals in the full-court press and preventing offensive rebounds.
“Lots of things to continue to work on, but we are making progress and moving forward,” Highland coach Jody Fink said.
The Huskies looked to feed senior Alyssa Brase in the post early on offense and she did just that with 14 points in the first half including two plays where she was fouled and made the bucket.
The Huskies got some additional offense from freshmen Abbi Stransky and Dani Laughlin draining a 3-pointer.
The Ravens had Yani Gutierrez hit a pair of free throws and Esther Hughes hit a jumper.
Out of halftime, the Ravens worked harder for rebounds on the offensive end and it paid off. Leah Bontrager finished with a team-high five offensive rebounds and hit her only shot of the night. The Ravens were even with Highland in the third quarter with each team scoring nine points.
“We need to continue to work on our rotations for our press and be patient when breaking the press,” Fink said.
Yani Gutierrez hit a pair of back-to-back 3-pointers in the third quarter.
The Huskies surged forward again in the fourth in the big win.
The win was the third straight for Highland.
