Hughes, Gutierrez lead Ravens kill machine

Esther Hughes, a junior, and Yanitza Gutierrez, a senior, led the Hillcrest Academy attack with eight kills in its home match against Wapello this past Thursday.

The Ravens won the first set by a score of 25-21, but Wapello answered back by sweeping the next three sets for the victory. The Arrows (6-7) won the second set, 25-14, then the third and fourth by scores of 25-18 and 25-14.

Hughes, who leads the Ravens with 73 kills, had a 21-kill week and is an offensive leader as the Ravens (1-12) head into play Thursday in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference.

Gutierrez led Hillcrest with two aces in the match against Wapello.

Sophie Marshall had six kills and Norah Yoder had a team-high 10 assists along with three kills.

Lindsy Massner led Wapello with eight kills.

Sept. 15: Pekin 3, Hillcrest 0

Hughes had a killer match for the Ravens, delivering a match-high 13 kills.

But the Ravens were swept in a road match at Pekin, 25-19, 25-17, 26-24.

No other Hillcrest player except for Hughes had more than three kills.

Yoder had eight assists and two aces. Gutierrez also had eight assists for the Ravens.
