Tim Mills and Will Hotz swept their way through the Montezuma Invitational to bring home first place at their weights.
Mills, who is now 4-1 on the season at 220 pounds, pinned his way to the win including a first-period pin in the championship match against Cale Anthony of Pleasantville. Mills and Anthony had both pinned two opponents on the way to the final before meeting. Mills quickly took control and won the 220-pound class at Montezuma.
Will Hotz pinned his opponent in the first round at 170 pounds, taking care of him in 1:45. Hotz then had to battle his way into the finals, but pulled away late for a 10-3 decision in the semifinals.
His finals opponent is 2-1 this season, a junior varsity wrestler from Class 3A Waukee, Blake Hauck. Hotz once again controlled the match from the start and pinned his opponent 90 seconds in to take the tournament win.
Lone Tree had one other wrestler attend the tournament, Matt Hemsted at 138 pounds. Hemsted lost his first two matches by fall and did not place.
Earlier in the week, Lone Tree took on Van Buren and New London in conference duals and split the pair. They beat Van Buren 24-12 in a match littered with forfeits. Four weights were contested, with Lone Tree winning all four.
Hemsted, Caden Smith, Hotz and Mills all pinned their opponents to win the four matches that were wrestled. Van Buren picked up forfeits at 113 and 285 to score their 12. There were eight double-forfeits.
New London then beat Lone Tree 63-0 in a dual. There were four contested matches during the dual. The closest match was Will Hotz versus Currey Jacobs at 170 pounds. Jacobs started the first period with a takedown to go up 2-0. A second-period escape pushed the score to 3-0 with two minutes left.
Hotz chose to go neutral into the third period to try and generate some offense. Jacobs fought off his shots and went on to win 3-0.
The Lions are off duals this week and will go to the Tri-County Invitational this Saturday in Thornburg.
