Hostetler and Lugar lead Hawks past Tipton on senior night

Fittingly for senior night, Golden Hawks seniors Phelan Hostetler and Myah Lugar combined for nearly half of their team’s points as Mid-Prairie downed Tipton 38-33.

The game was marked by low scores and a near-complete lack of free throw opportunities. Neither team scored more than 13 points in a quarter.

“Our goal was to have single-digit quarters, and we did that the first quarter,” Hostetler said. “Our team has really good chemistry, so I think that worked out.”

Hostetler and Lugar led the way for Mid-Prairie, the former with 11 points, the latter with six and her team’s only three-point basket.

Amara Jones led the Golden Hawks with five assists and five steals.

It was a rash of three-pointers early on that led to the Tigers’ early dominance. Four of their five baskets in the first half came from behind the arc.

Luckily for the Golden Hawks, that success lessened as the game went on. While the Tigers kept trying to recapture their early long-range success, Mid-Prairie focused on rebounds and building up a steadier lead.

Lugar and Maddie Nonnenmann grabbed a team-high six rebounds while Jones and Nora Pennington each finished with five.

With their seniors, and Nonnemann who had 13 points, firing on all cylinders, the Mid-Prairie squad managed a victory that was more dominant than the scoresheet would suggest.

“We’ve got a lot of goals in mind and we’re going to keep getting them done,” Lugar said.

After the game, Lugar and Hostetler were honored for their contributions as part of the Senior Night festivities. The seniors said they’ve greatly enjoyed their time playing basketball in Wellman.

“It’s been so special playing together for so long,” Hostetler said, “and it’s a hundred percent going to be missed.”
