LONE TREE

Hillcrest Academy volleyball coach Brandon Statler can sleep now.

That’s how much an Oct. 5 sweep of Lone Tree meant to Statler and the Ravens.

The Ravens lost their home finale in 2022 to the Lions by scores of 25-18, 25-21, 25-20. It created a sleepless winter.

“I lost sleep for months over last year’s home loss to them,” Statler said. “We completely devastated ourselves.”

Last Thursday, Hillcrest returned the favor. Malia Yoder, a junior, had a match-high 13 kills, a match-high 4 service aces and a match-high 15 defensive digs, leading the Ravens to their second sweep of last week. They also swept Cedar Valley Christian.

“To get them 3-0 in their home court, Senior Night. These girls were dialed in, they’re focused,” Statler said. “And what’s what we came out to do.”

Hillcrest won by scores of 25-10, 25-13, 25-20, handing the Lions their fourth straight loss and 19th of the season. Sophomore setter Claire Withrow had a match-high 33 assists.

Lydia Beachy, a junior, and Niva Helmuth, a sophomore, added 6 kills for the Ravens.

“It’s gonna pay dividends down the road,” Statler said. “Just to finish strong. Two sweeps in a week. That’s something we haven’t done in a long time.”

Cate Sexton, a Lone Tree junior, led the Lions with 6 kills and 2 aces.

Madison Floyd and Alex Dautremont each had 3 kills for Lone Tree. Hogan Eden had 11 digs.

Next Monday, the Lions play at Keota in the first round of the 1A regional.

Washington Classic

The Ravens swept Sigourney in two sets Saturday at the Washington Volleyball Classic after losing to Iowa City Regina and host Washington.

Yoder led Hillcrest with 23 kills and 27 digs over the three matches.

Hillcrest (9-13) defeated Sigourney by scores of 21-18, 21-16.

The Ravens lost to Regina, the 13th-ranked team in Class 2A, by 21-11 and 21-7 scores. They lost to Washington, 9-21, 21-18, 7-15.

Withrow had a team-leading 33 assists over three matches. Yoder (5) and Withrow (4) combined for 9 service aces. Lydia Beachy had 6 kills.

Kylee Statler, a junior, had 4 kills in the win against Sigourney and sophomore Niva Helmuth had 3.
