Hillcrest Ravens get postseason honors

Posted

The only two seniors on the softball team at Hillcrest Academy finished their high school careers with an academic and athletic flourish.

Sarena Gerber and Mia Graber were both named the Academic All-State Team, an honor that requires a 3.75 grade-point average and strong college entrance scores (27 or higher on the ACT or 1200 or higher on the SAT).

Graber started all 12 games for the Ravens and hit .242. Gerber was one of six Hillcrest players to score runs this season.

Gerber and Graber were among eight Ravens named to the SEISC Academic All-Conference team. Joining them were Meredith Blossom, Sarah Miller, Leah Bontrager, Evelyn Gerber, Esther Hughes and Norah Yoder.

Academic All-Conference honors require a minimum GPA of 3.25.

Fall Start

The first day of practice for fall sports entered with a crash Monday.

Severe storms cut power in all communities and left wind damage throughout streets, schools and business districts.

Mid-Prairie moved its volleyball practice from the high school to the Kalona Y. However, the football team was able to hold its first practice in windy conditions on its regular practice field late in the afternoon.

Highland also held its first practice for varsity and junior varsity squad members late Monday afternoon.

After the storm hit Lone Tree hard and killed power across the town, no practices were held Monday afternoon.

FOOTBALL STARTS

Mid-Prairie, Highland and Lone Tree began football workouts Monday and are on target to open their seasons August 28.

The regular season will consist of seven weeks, followed by the playoffs. All teams in all classes, no matter their records, will qualify for the postseason.

Championship weekend remains November 20 and 21.

LOCKOUT

Joe Drzycimski, a baseball player at Gilbert High School, has the best of bathroom tales to talk about now.

Seems that Joe needed to go to the bathroom just before his team’s game in the Class 3A baseball semifinals July 31 at Principal Park in Des Moines. And he couldn’t get out. It took a sledgehammer and a crowbar to rescue him.

Drzycimski, a junior second baseman, had a hit and scored a run in Gilbert’s 14-7 victory over Dallas Center-Grimes. Gilbert lost the title game to Norwalk, 8-6.
