Highland school district voters overwhelmingly approved a $3.7 million bond issue to upgrade the heating and cooling system at the middle and high schools.
The bonds will pay for an addition to the high school fine arts area and build a new playground at the elementary school.
The bond received yes votes from 71 percent of the voters in the election, passing 420-169. The measure needed 60 percent of voters to approve it to pass. It had a 66-vote margin.
Compared to the most recent school board election in 2017, the turnout was large. In Tuesday’s election, 589 voters cast ballots to decide the bond issue, compared to 137 who voted in the 2017 school board election.
The town of Ainsworth, which saw its elementary school close in 2017, barely supported the bond issue. With 158 voters casting ballots in the Ainsworth precinct, the vote was 81-77 or 51 percent support for the measure.
By contrast, 80 percent of voters in the Riverside precinct approved the bond issue as did 65 percent of absentee voters.
