The Highland Community School District will need to build a facility to clean wastewater from the high school and middle school.
School board members had hoped to build the equivalent of a septic tank to meet Department of Natural Resources requirements.
However, Matt Wildman, an engineer with HR Green, said that tests show the soil where the leach field was planned is not conducive to filtering wastewater.
“The soils are not good for on-site waste disposal,” he told the school board.
Wildman said about nine inches below the surface the soil is a hard clay that does not allow water to percolate through the soil.
He said the district will need to look at a facility to treat the water before it is discharged.
The board approved a facility plan that will be submitted to the DNR this month. The plan does not specify a specific solution. It lists a number of options.
