The Highland school district dropped 12 students this year – both in actual enrollment and the certified enrollment used by the state to determine funding levels.
But enrollment projections Superintendent Ken Crawford gave to the school board on Monday evening shows the enrollment is leveling off and should start slowly growing in coming years.
That is based on the assumption of 50 students entering kindergarten each year.
This year Highland has 52 kindergarteners.
“That’s our goal, to get 50 in kindergarten each year,” Crawford said. “With the new housing, we are anticipating steady numbers for coming years.”
The actual number of students enrolled this year is 566, down from 578 last year. The certified enrollment, based on a complicated formula used by the state, is 620 students, compared with 632 last year.
Three more students open enrolled out of the district this year than last, balanced with three more students open enrolling into the district. Open enrollment out means students living in the district attend school elsewhere. Open enrollment in means students from other districts attend Highland schools.
