Andy Greiner, the 2020 River Valley Conference Coach of the Year, has resigned as head coach of the Mid-Prairie High School baseball team.

Greiner submitted his resignation this past Friday in a meeting with athletics director Tyler Hotz.

The Golden Hawks won River Valley Conference, district and substate titles this year, reaching the Class 2A state tournament for the first time in 13 years. Mid-Prairie was eliminated by West Lyon in the quarterfinal round on July 27.

Greiner, who owns a roofing company in Kalona, had been with the Mid-Prairie baseball program since the early 2000s and was an assistant coach when the Golden Hawks won a state championship in 2004. Greiner told The News on Monday that he is leaving the program in order to spend more time with his family; he has three children who are students at Mid-Prairie.

“It’s been on my heart for awhile,” he said. “I shared it with my assistants. They were pretty shocked. I think everybody pretty much understands.”

“I’ve enjoyed working with Andy,” Hotz said. “He’s a really great person. He’s a good guy to be around. I wish him the best of luck in whatever he does next.”

Mid-Prairie won 15 of 19 games this summer and had won eight in a row before the loss to West Lyon at Principal Park in Des Moines.

“We walk away with our heads held high,” Greiner said. “Super proud of what we accomplished here. I really look forward to seeing the program evolve and continue to move forward.”
