Gregory Lee Hansen

1965 - 2019

Gregory Lee Hansen was born Feb. 8, 1963, in Estherville, Iowa, to Gary and Laurie Hansen, who preceded him from this world. He leaves two daughters, Kelsey and Shelby, whom he loved the way a good father does, a brother, Brad (Wendy), sister Kathy (Ken) Alessi, his aunt “GAM” McKean Boyle, nieces and nephews, and his partner in his life, Susan Rangus.

He graduated from Allison Bristow High School in 1981, and worked 35 years for Stutsmans Inc. in Hills, Iowa. He was an avid golfer and active member of the Kalona Golf Club, golfing in the men’s league and tournament.  He also enjoyed a friendly game of cards on Wednesday nights with his buddies.

Greg was intelligent with a quick wit, ready with a pun, warm to know and an easy friend to make. He had great recall and could readily recite lines and plots from movies. He had a deep sentiment for life and the things he grew up with. After his folks passed, he and his siblings, though apart, made sure to have a time every year to be together.

His daughters remember their father’s flare for creative play. They loved Barbie dolls, and finding the plastic homes sold for the dolls lacking, Greg built a Barbie house to proper scale with all the details including a garage.

He experienced the little things of life with openness and quiet happiness. He liked Elvis, anything Marvel Comics-related and action films. He was a devoted Hawkeye and Dallas Cowboys fan.

When they met, Susan says she fell in love with a real person, a stand up guy, who showed his love for her over and over again. They shared time, a home, golf, blessings, love and a full life together for nine years.

This summer Greg began to lose energy and suffer health issues. Some potential causes were ruled out, but the problem persisted. Still, in things great and small, he continued to care and do what he could. On Oct. 23, he passed away peacefully in his sleep.

Funeral service was held Monday, Oct. 28, 2019, at the Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona.  Rev. Gene Kubli officiated.  A memorial fund has been established for the Kalona Golf Course.
