Golden Hawks run away with 52-25 win over Washington

The Golden Hawk offense made sporadic appearances on Monday, but the defense was locked in for all four quarters during a 52-25 win over Washington.

Maddie Nonnenmann led Mid-Prairie with 14 points and 14 rebounds in the nonconference rivalry win over the 2-14 Demons.

Mid-Prairie led 16-6 in the first quarter, but Washington was able hang around with the 3-point shot. The Golden Hawks had field goal droughts of 4:55 and 2:43 as the Demons cut the lead to 19-14.

Cana Rediger hit a 3-point shot late in the second quarter to restore the 10-point lead heading into halftime. Each team had just one field goal through the first four-and-a-half minutes of the second half when the Golden Hawks scored nine over a span of 80 seconds.

Amara Jones hit a 3-pointer and then stole the ball and drew a foul to start the 9-0 run. She finished with six points, four assists, and four steals.

“I think we passed it around and worked it in for a good shot instead of just taking a quick one,” Jones said about the run. “And our shots were falling then too, so that was nice.”

After a 12-2 fourth quarter run, Mid-Prairie emptied the bench with four minutes left and a 46-21 lead.

“I think it was making better decisions on offense,” Mid-Prairie coach Danny Hershberger said about the second half.  “Finding where the openings were, and then shooting the ball with more confidence than we did in the first half. The biggest thing was just our mindset – being more prepared with what we're doing on offense and executing our shot.”

Mid-Prairie finished with 16 assists on 19 field goals, while Washington had just five. Myah Lugar had four assists and Nora Pennington had three. Esther Hughes finished with 10 points, six rebounds, and three steals.

While three of Washington’s first five field goals came from the 3-point line, the Demons ended up shooting just 4-20 from deep overall. Mid-Prairie did not allow more than nine points in a quarter and the Golden Hawks forced 27 turnovers.

“The biggest thing was just trying to be active out there,” Hershberger said. “We know at times they can get streaky and hit some shots. But we felt like if we're moving our feet, with our hands up and kind of rushing them, they're not going to make as many. That's what we wanted to do, just be as active as we could on the defensive end.”

Phelan Hostetler had six points and blocked four shots, while Nonnenmann had three blocks.

Washington’s leading scorer Anna Nacos nearly reached her season average with eight points in the first quarter, but she did not score a point after that.

“We knew that was the one girl that we had to make sure we were getting out on,” Hershberger said. “And we didn't do a good job of it in the first half. So, something we wanted to work on the second half was limiting her and not letting her score. And the girls did a great job of knowing where she was at and not letting her get good looks.”

Mid-Prairie improved to 9-8 with the win. The Golden Hawks have not been more than one game over or under .500 at any point this season.
