Golden Hawks leave North Scott with four champs

Posted

It was a third straight first-place finish for Sarah Meader in the wrestling tournament at North Scott on Saturday.

Caitlyn Busch, Mia Garvey, and Browyn Brenneman each went 3-0 as well to finish first in their weight classes.

“The girls had a great day,” Mid-Prairie wrestling coach Justin Garvey said. “They’re really progressing, and I was really happy to see how they’ve improved from the start of the season.”

Busch began the day with a rematch against Clear Creek-Amana’s Emma Mathis, who won a 10-7 decision in their first meeting on December 14. Busch went 0-3 that day, but on Saturday she pinned Mathis in 3:33 and went on to pin her next two opponents as well.

“It was a big day for her, her first tournament championship,” Garvey said.

“She had three pins, wrestled really tough all day, stayed in good position and stayed where she needed to be to win.”

Brenneman wrestled for a total of just two minutes and 52 seconds on Saturday. Her final match was the longest, ending with a 79-second pin of North Scott’s Anna Hodge.

“I saw two of her matches,” Garvey said.  “She looked really sharp on her feet today, got to her takedowns. And all of our girls are super aggressive with power halves, so that was really helpful today.”

Mia Garvey and Meader each won all three matches by pin as well. North Scott’s Jori Hanenburg was a winner by fall over Garvey in Mid-Prairie’s last action in Wilton on December 19. On Saturday, Meader was able to pin Hanenburg in two minutes on the way to another first-place finish.

All three of Garvey’s pins came in under two minutes.

“She needs to get to that offense on her feet a little better,” Justin Garvey said. “But her defense on her feet is really strong. She had a really strong day.”

“Mia and Sarah wrestled through some pretty tough brackets and looked really good. And the other two were wrestling really, really solid.”

The Golden Hawk girls went 16-8 overall.

Brittney Pfeifer was 2-1 for the day to finish runner-up in her weight class. Madison Kelly and Ellie Brenneman each finished third, while Emil Harmston was fourth.
