Washington scored a run in the sixth inning, breaking a 4-4 tie, and knocked off seventh-ranked Mid-Prairie, 5-4, on Friday night at Washington.
The Demons also struck for three runs in the third inning and one run in the fourth, spoiling a strong pitching performance by Mid-Prairie starter Collin Miller.
“Collin Miller pitched a heck of a game for us. He threw strikes,” said Mid-Prairie head coach Kyle Mullet.
Aidan Rath of Mid-Prairie led off the seventh inning with a walk, but was thrown out at second base on a steal attempt during a failed sacrifice bunt. Two of the next three Mid-Prairie batters were retired, ending the game.
“We get down toward the end of the game there, some mental things,” Mullet said. “We had some bad at-bats later on. That comes from our mental approach. It wasn’t a physical thing. It’s kind of a team approach that we have, and some guys got away from that. It came back to bite us, put us in some bad positions for outs.”
The Golden Hawks (16-6) are back home on Monday for a Senior Night doubleheader against Iowa City Regina Catholic (12-11). Seniors Kayden Reinier, Keegan Gingerich, Vinny Bowlin, Nathan Quinby, Jake Swartzendruber,, Keegan Brady and Rath will be honored between games.
