Golden Hawks fall to No. 7 West Liberty

The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks arrived in West Liberty this past Thursday with an impressive start to the season.

The Hawks had won their first four matches and were a perfect 10-0 in sets.

But the road in the River Valley Conference became a bit rocky in West Liberty. The Comets, who are coming off a 31-win season in 2019 and are ranked seventh in Class 3A, swept the Golden Hawks in three sets.

The victory was the 14th straight for West Liberty, which has lost just one set all season. The Comets’ last loss came in the quarterfinals of the 2019 state tournament.

West Liberty won the match by scores of 25-13, 25-13, 25-11.

Martha Pace, a West Liberty senior, delivered a match-best 15 kills along with a pair of aces. Macy Daufeldt and Brooklyn Buysse added nine kills apiece.

The Golden Hawks were seeking their first win over the Comets since 2009.

Despite the loss, the Hawks are in the middle of a conference race that will see them play three matches in six days. They play at Cascade on Thursday night and host West Branch in a rescheduled match next Monday night in Wellman. Cascade has won eight of its first 10 matches.

Tori Boyse, a senior, leads the Golden Hawks with 22 kills. Phelan Hostetler, a senior, and Alyssa McDowell, a junior, each have eight blocks. Sophomore setter Landry Pacha has 67 assists.
