For the third time in the past year, there is an open seat on the Mid-Prairie school board.
Gerry Kahler announced his resignation from the school board at the end of Monday night’s meeting. His resignation was effective immediately.
Kahler said that he is moving to pastor the Conrad Beaman Methodist Churches in Grundy County and leaving Kalona on July 1.
He has served as pastor of the Kalona United Methodist Church for more than 10 years.
Kahler was appointed on Sept. 10 to fill the seat of long-time school board member Jim Hussey, who resigned in August 2018 because he was moving to Iowa City.
Mid-Prairie Business Manager Jeff Swartzentruber said that the school board is already working on finding someone to appoint to the seat within the next 30 days.
“The appointed person will fill the seat until the November elections,” Swartzentruber said.
He added that the election to the seat will be for two years, to fill out the remainder of Hussey’s original term. Hussey was re-elected to the seat in 2017.
In June 2018, board member George Schaefer resigned from the school board.
Emily Uhl was appointed to the board on July 9, but a petition was filed triggering a special election, which Uhl won on Aug. 28.
