Fourth-quarter effort not enough for Huskies

An 18-3 fourth-quarter run wasn’t enough to bring Highland all the way back in a 69-59 loss at English Valleys on Thursday.

Colby Stokes scored six of his 15 points during a 12-0 spurt in the fourth quarter, but Huskies couldn’t get the Bears lead under six in the closing minutes.

“When we run an offense, we look pretty fluid,” Highland coach Bill Zywiec said.

“When we become one-on-one, it’s pretty tough to beat teams.

“We have to be coachable, we have to run our offenses. And when we did that, good things happened for us.”

Connor Grinstead scored six of his 15 points in the first quarter and the Huskies trailed just 19-18 early in the second quarter. A Grinstead 3-pointer would be the only Highland points for the next several minutes as the Bears made four from behind the arc during a 20-3 run.

“We have spurts where we play really well and we have spurts when we don’t play well,” Zywiec said. “If you get down a little bit and then all sudden that little bit turns into a lot. Now you’re fighting uphill, and that takes a lot of energy. But it’s encouraging to know we did some good things.”

Chase Schultz and Kaige Vonnahme each scored four points during the Huskies’ fourth-quarter run. Schultz finished with 14 points and two assists. Grinstead had the best shooting night at 7-14 and he also led the Huskies with seven rebounds.

The Bears’ 6-foot-3 junior Kaden Hall had 24 points, 13 rebounds and blocked five shots.

English Valleys had 15 assists on 23 field goals, while Highland had just five assists on 22.

“They play hard, but at times I kind of refer to it as open gym ball,” Zywiec said.

“I think I burned through every timeout I had tonight, and we started communicating a little bit better. We actually ran some offense and we hit some shots. In the first half we didn’t get a lot of shots, in the fourth quarter, stuff started falling for us.”

“If we play with that energy that we did in the last four minutes for the entire game. That’s what we have to build to do, and we’re still learning how to do that.”
