Fourth-graders make cards for cancer patients

Posted

Last school year, Mid-Prairie West Elementary fourth-graders had “Flex Friday” time each week and could choose various projects to work on.

A group of students chose card-making with Emily Pennington, with the help of retired Mid-Prairie teacher Lynda Wilson.

The students made a number of cards for varying occasions and sold them in the school office.

Later in the year, teachers came up with the idea of making cards for cancer patients at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

It was a decision that hit particularly close to home.

Wilson is a cancer survivor, and fourth-grade teacher Suzanne Yoder was diagnosed with breast cancer and could not complete the 2018-19 school year.

In addition to making cards for cancer patients, the students used the money they earned from the sale of cards earlier in the year to buy snacks and water to give to patients with the cards.
