Kalona Volunteer Fire Dept. were called to a fire in an old hog house being used as a storage shed on the Ezra Smith farm, 1865 Highway, Kalona, on Sept. 7 at 3:10 p.m. and were on the scene until 6 p.m. The building was a total loss according to Fire Chief Jerry Zahradnek. Wellman and Washington Fire Departments assisted. Firemen were able to keep the fire from spreading to other buildings and were able to cool down an LP tank that had vented.
