Edgar W. Gardner passed away peacefully in Napa, Calif., on Aug. 18, 2020, at the age of 89.
Ed was born April 16, 1931, in Iowa City. He attended the one room schoolhouse in Morse, Iowa, and graduated from Iowa City City High School in 1949.
Following a four-year tour of duty in the U.S. Air Force, Ed returned home to operate the family farm. Ten years later he moved to Napa, Calif., where he worked on nuclear submarines at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard. After his retirement he enjoyed traveling and operating his walnut orchard.
Ed is survived by his son: Dennis (Rene) Arps of Riverside; their daughters: Deanna and Megan; daughter: Debra Awe, Columbus Junction; her sons: Joshua (Jamie) and Travis (Christine); son: Thomas (Sally) Schaidhammer of Stafford, Va.; their sons: Sam and Joey; son: Sean (Sara) Gillihan of Napa, Calif.; daughter: Kathleen (Donald) Philips of Napa, Calif.; and their son: Calvin; sister: Marjorie Skriver of Hills; and brother: John Bruce Gardner (Paula Griffin) of Elmira, Iowa.
Ed is preceded in death by his wife: Rosie; and parents: Roscoe and Edna (Kauffman) Gardner.
