Donald Ray Schrock, 78, of Muscatine, passed away Monday, April 20, 2020, following a brief illness.

Don was born Sept. 12, 1941, in Grantsville, Md., the son of Elmer J. and Alma (Hostetler) Schrock. As a teenager, Don would take the train from Cedar Rapids to Oregon in the summer to be with his brother, Duane. After attending Kalona High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and was trained as an air traffic controller. He served in that capacity in England and the United States. After leaving the Air Force, he returned to Kalona where he ran what was known as The Chicken House.

Eventually he left the Kalona area and returned to Oregon and the West Coast, which he dearly loved as a teenager.

A number of years ago, Don returned and lived in Muscatine.

Don is survived by his sons: Robert Tomes of Tarleton, England and Anthony Schrock of St. Cloud, Minn.; grandsons: Bradley, George and Archie Tomes; sisters, Emma Jean Schrock of Kalona, Doris Thirtle of Kalona and Shirley (Mike) Michelozzi of Plainwell, Mich.; sister-in-law: Gail Schrock of Kalona; and many nieces and nephews.

Don was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Robert, Duane and Stanley.

A family graveside service was held Saturday, April 25 at East Union Mennonite Church. A memorial services will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in Don’s name to benefit the City of Kalona. Donations may be sent to his sister Doris at 114 Pleasantivew Circle, Kalona, IA 52247.
