Gov. Kim Reynolds formally requested an expedited Presidential Major Disaster Declaration for Iowa communities and counties that have been severely impacted by the devastating derecho storm that occurred on Aug. 10.

The governor requested funding under the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Individual Assistance Program for 27 counties, including Johnson County.

Reynolds also requested funding under FEMA’s Public Assistance Program for the repair or replacement of public infrastructure and debris removal for 16 counties, including Washington and Johnson counties.

The Iowa Individual Assistance Grant Program provides grants of up to $5,000 for households with incomes up to 200 percent of the federal poverty level or a maximum annual income of $43,440 for a family of three.

Grants are available for home or car repairs, replacement of clothing or food and temporary housing expenses.

Original receipts are required for those seeking reimbursement for actual expenses related to storm recovery.

The grant application and instructions are available on the Iowa Department of Human Services website. Potential applicants have 45 days from the date of the proclamation to submit a claim.

Information about the Iowa Department of Human Services disaster assistance programs, including food assistance replacement and the Iowa Individual Assistance Grant Program is available at dhs.iowa.gov/disaster-assistance-programs.

Property damage can be self-reported at www.crisistrack.com/public/johnsonIA/request.html.

This is the first step in submitting a claim for the Iowa Individual Grant Program.

Grants are available for home or car repairs, replacement of clothing or food, and temporary housing expenses.
