KALONA

Republicans announced their 2024 presidential caucus locations on Dec. 8, and Democrats followed suite on Dec. 15, preparing for the first contest in the presidential nominating cycle. Both parties will caucus on Jan. 15 at 7 p.m. By law, Iowans can participate in only one political party’s caucuses.

To take part in the Republican caucus, you must be a legal resident of Iowa and a registered Republican voter. If you are not a registered voter or registered with a party, you may register in-person at your caucus location on caucus night. You will need to provide a valid form of ID, and if you need to register, also proof of address (such as a utility bill, paycheck, or property tax statement).

To determine your precinct, visit the Iowa Secretary of State’s website at sos.iowa.gov and enter your home address.

For local precincts in Johnson and Washington Counties, the Republican caucus locations are as follows:

Wellman precinct: Wellman Parkside Activity Center, 525 13th St., Wellman.

Washington precinct: Washington Twp. School Gym, 1592 Angle Rd. SW, Kalona.

Sharon precinct: Sharon United Methodist Church, 2804 520th St. SW, Kalona.

Kalona precinct: East Elementary, 702 6th St., Kalona.

Although Democrats will also caucus on Jan. 15, their presidential preference must be made by mail-in ballot. Presidential preference cards are being mailed out beginning Jan. 12; the final day to request a card is Feb. 19. Completed cards must be postmarked on or before March 5, “Super Tuesday,” when caucus results are set to be released. To receive a presidential preference card, submit your request on iowademocrats.org/caucus.

On caucus night, Democrats will elect unbound delegates and alternate delegates to county conventions, elect county central committee members, and discuss platform resolutions that can be shared at county conventions.

To participate in the Democratic caucuses, you must be an Iowa Democrat eligible to vote and registered by Feb. 19, 2024.

All precincts in Washington County will caucus at Washington Public Library, 115 W. Washington St., Washington.

Precincts SN, WS, HS, LB, and P will caucus at Hills Elementary School Gym, 301 Main St., Hills.
