City of Kalona is seeking 2020 Community Award nominations

The city of Kalona is putting out a call for community award nominations.

The awards are traditionally announced and presented at Kalona Days in June.

These awards are given to individuals and businesses who have had a major impact on the Kalona community in one way or another.

The Community Awards are traditionally a highlight of the annual Kalona Days celebration in June, but COVID-19 has changed that this year.

“There are no Kalona Days this year, and our backup plan was the Kalona Fall Festival, but that’s been canceled,” City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh said. “This is not the appropriate year to schedule an in-person event.”

Anyone can nominate someone for a community award.

Forms are available at City Hall, online at cityofkalona.org and on Page 14A of this week’s edition of The News.

Nominations should be submitted by the end of business on Monday, Aug. 17.

Awards will be announced in late August or early September.

“We will put that out with nominations, and we’ll take nominations through Aug. 17,” Schlabaugh said. “As opposed to doing a community gathering, we’ll get some pictures and videos of people receiving their awards.”

The Community Awards began in 2012.

“It started as a one-time event,” Schlabaugh said. “It was so popular, we decided to continue it each year.”

Past winners were:
